Is Technology Necessary for Montessori Schools?
The use of computers and technology has been quite evident in mainstream school settings. However, the Montessori approach is significantly different in this regard. According to Dr. Maria Montessori's principles, a Montessori classroom environment has to be **very specific**.
**Playing with Concrete Materials**
The environment of a Montessori classroom is deliberately organised to enhance the different capabilities children are born with. These goals are primarily achieved by allowing children to **play with concrete materials**.
**Benefits of Playing with Concrete Materials**
- Increases concentration.
- Develops fine and gross motor control.
- Trains discrimination — the ability to perceive subtle differences.
- Builds judgment through trial-and-error.
- Teaches the child to regulate their own movement.
If a child does only digital activities, none of these abilities — especially those concerning muscle movement and coordination — can be developed.
