Using Computers in a Montessori Setting
**Why are Digital Activities Not Encouraged?**
When a child uses a computer, they do not do much of the work themselves. Instead, the larger part of the activity is **software-regulated** — the device decides what comes next, not the child.
For a child in their early years, this brings out several disadvantages:
- Less interaction with the people around them.
- Lack of gross and fine muscle movement.
- Reduction in the ability of perception, judgment, and discrimination.
**Control Exposure of the Digital World for Limited Time**
If digital tools are used at all, they should be:
- Strictly time-limited (often less than 20 minutes per day for under-sixes).
- Always co-viewed with an adult.
- Used for a clear purpose, not as a babysitter.
- Followed immediately by a hands-on, concrete activity.
