Global Recognition of ECE in the Modern Age
The modern age has accelerated the recognition of ECE. In **2000**, the **Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)** were adopted at the UN Millennium Summit. Two of these eight goals are deeply linked to early childhood:
- **MDG 4 — Reduce child mortality**
- **MDG 5 — Improve maternal health**
Both goals indirectly depend on the quality of care and education a child receives during the early years.
From MDGs to SDGs
Building on the MDGs, the **Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)** adopted in 2015 made ECE even more explicit. **SDG 4.2** sets a clear target:
> *"By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care and pre-primary education so that they are ready for primary education."*
This continues to shape national education policy and funding worldwide.
