Deploying the Hands-On Approach with Math Materials
The hands-on approach is one of the significant contributions of Dr. Maria Montessori. Below are some Montessori math materials that bring the hands-on approach to life:
**Number Rods** — a set of ten wooden rods. The shortest is 10 cm long; each successive rod is 10 cm longer. Their colour alternates between blue and red, demarcating each unit. These rods are a great way of teaching children about numbers and counting.
**Sandpaper Numerals** — numerals (0–9) cut from sandpaper and mounted on cards. The child traces them with two fingers, learning the symbol through **touch** before they ever try to write it.
**Cards & Counters** — numeral cards (1–10) paired with counters that the child arranges below each number, often in pairs to introduce the concept of **odd and even**.
**Bead Chains** — coloured bead chains for skip-counting (2s, 3s, 4s …). The child literally walks the length of the chain, counting each bead, building a physical sense of multiplication.
