Process vs Aesthetics

Supporting a Child in Their Creativity

The child and the adult mind work differently when it comes to art. An adult appreciates the **aesthetics** of art; the child cares about the **process**. For adults, supporting a child who is making a "mess" can be difficult — but this is precisely how children learn. Some ways an adult can support a child through an art activity: - **Appropriate environment** — provide the necessary supplies and hang artwork around the room so the child sees that their creations are valued. - **Process over product** — comment on what you observe ("You used so much blue today") rather than judging the result ("That's a nice tree"). - **Supportive behavior** — sit nearby, paint your own picture, demonstrate enthusiasm. - **Patience** — accept the mess as part of the learning. - **Self-direction** — let the child choose what to make. A child will indeed create a lot of mess while working with colours and paints. Learning to practice patience during this time will be a great help.
